Ever wondered what it means to be an actor? How you become an actor -what the demands are, and what the rewards – what you need to know and what you need to survive?
I am an actor of 20 years’ standing. I have held the “day job” and tried to balance my artistic addiction. I have gone from community theatre to professional acting. I have studied with “bad” acting teachers and titans of the craft.
For a short time I even opened an acting school to share my understanding of what “good acting” is.
For me, ”good acting” means being willing to be emotionally open and openly yourself – as a character – in front of lots of strangers. Good acting requires acting ability, but it also calls for all of the non-acting requirements as well: knowing how to behave on set, or backstage, or onstage; when and how to behave in the varying stage or movie situations; and of course the physical demands and tricks that need to become second nature so that you can focus on the work at hand: acting!
It’s one helluva lot of fun – from the behind the scenes to what we see when it’s all completed and ready for show!
I have been doing this work for a long time, and I’m on my way to that full-time career. You’re welcome to come along for the journey!
So let’s boogie… (And if you have acting questions, please let me know; I’d love to answer them in future blogs!)
Love & laughter to you,
Let me know you’re alive! Let me know you’ve been here! Leave me a comment! Show me some love! Or even some criticism! Let’s party with words!
Mwah!
hello
I stumbled upon your blog while researching how to get coached by Harold Guskin. I am an actor in NYC, have moved here from the Seattle area 6 years ago. Did you do the TPS audition in Seattle, are you from the area as well? If so how did it go? I’m thinking about doing it this year….
Thanks in advance for any tips!

Hi Lori! I cut & paste your blog site from Randy’s CarePage. Just wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading your stuff. (It offered a much needed break from nursing school homework
You’re a really good writer – and fun! I found myself smiling and laughing about cubicle hell (which I have unfortunately experienced.) I was intrigued with your piece about communicating with Randy. Very interesting & reassuring – especially the part about Randy being happy & radiant. I think that’s what we all want – that he be free of sickness and surrounded by love. He taught me a lot about love and friendship and I miss him greatly. May his memory be for a blessing!
Hey Lori,
Glad to see you got the blog up and running; looking forward to keeping up to date with your exploits. So sorry to hear about Randy; my condolences. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.
Best, Harry
just stumbled upon this after doing a general search for Guskin- just finished his book and it’s the best one i’ve read for actors yet, can’t believe you got to work with him! yay you! i’ve been ‘taking it off the page’ for a king lear monologue (well, it’s Edmund’s bastard speech) and it’s helping tonnes – acting’s become mad fun again
ha ha, glad you;re getting out of corporate america. i’m in a transitory phase of getting out of corporate uk through writing, illustration and acting, well at least that’s the plan
best of luck! x
Hello LaFemme (but why sabotage?)!
Can you believe Guskin? Just incredible! And I know – I can’t believe I got to work with him either, but I plan on not believing that in the future as many times as I can! As soon as the money is in my hand, I’m flying back to New York! So there.
Love your plan – how could I not? – of getting out of corporate uk through writing, illustration and acting. Are you doing theatre and film and advertisemens?
I’m wishing you luck and will in getting out of the corporate jungle! So important for the creative soul, no?
All the best!
Lori
